Stewardship 2016: Pray & Work
Pray & Work is the theme for the 2016 Stewardship Campaign that begins on October 11 with our annual Stewardship Luncheon and culminates with Dedication Sunday on October 25. The preaching “sub theme” for these weeks is "The Stewardship of Prayer and Work” that will cover the stewardship of time, of money, and of self. Is there anything in our lives that cannot be included under the headings of time, money, and self? Join others in conversation around this theme on October 11, following the 11:00a service.
From Rev. Chandler Stokes:
It seems to me that the concept of stewardship always comes down to this simple verse:
We give Thee but Thine own, whate’er the gift may be.
There’s a joke about a contest between scientists and God about making a world. Each with his or her own resources would make a bird. So the scientists went first and began by taking up a hunk of earth. And God said, “Hey, you gotta bring your own dirt.”
It’s very easy to forget how much of what we have and who we are is a gift from God. And, when we do, the tradition calls us to consider ourselves stewards or caretakers of these gifts, of everything we have. We are not owners but caretakers. That’s where the idea of stewardship begins and invariably leads.
