Westminster Youth

Sermon     Worship Youth
Sunday, February 8, 2015

"Rooted and Reaching" We are blessed at Westminster to have a thriving youth ministry as well as a vibrant music ministry where our youth are invited almost every Sunday to offer their gifts to God as part of the public and visible worshipping life of the Church. On one Sunday each year, we are further blessed as the youth are invited and empowered to plan and enact the whole drama of the Sunday liturgy together.

Jeremy Bork called to be Middle School Youth Director

Staff News Updates Youth Youth Group
Tuesday, January 20, 2015

WPC Youth is excited to announce the hiring of our new Middle School Youth Director, Jeremy Bork. A native of Iowa, Jeremy studied Youth Ministry and Christian Education at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and is currently a Master of Divinity student at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. You may have seen Jeremy around WPC already, serving the congregation as both a Seminary Intern and a volunteer leader for the Middle School Youth Group and Middle School Church School.

Jeremy’s previous work in ministry includes youth ministry internships for RCA churches in Iowa and New York, as well as serving as a leader in his college’s campus ministry and working as a program director at Ingham Lake Bible Camp in Wallingford, Iowa.

Jeremy’s responsibilities as Middle School Youth Director will include planning and running Youth Group and Middle School Church School on Sundays as well as leading retreats and serving as a spiritual leader and mentor to the middle school youth.

Jeremy has a heart for equality and justice. He longs for racial reconciliation, food and animal justice, and the welcome of all persons in the church. Jeremy is super excited to be part of Westminster’s community and is eager to dive deeper!

Minister to Youth and Their Families

Westminster is searching for its next Minister to Youth and their families.

This is a full-time position with supervisory responsibility for a part-time High School director and a Middle School director. The youth ministry at Westminster is vibrant. Ministry Architects just came through and gave us glowing reviews. The ministry is already really working. It doesn’t need fixing; it just needs leadership.

We have a good and long history of youth ministry at Westminster. We’ve got about one hundred youth involved in the program and a number of highly dedicated lay leaders at the heart of it. We have regularly participated in the Montreat Youth Conference, and that helps define the ethos of our ministry: real, deep, authentic, life-giving and empowering.

You would be joining a cohesive and integrated staff—Minister for Educator, Minister for Music and Head of Staff all deeply committed to youth ministry. It’s a great position in a thriving congregation. Join us.

For more information, or to apply, please contact Joel Schultze, chair of the Youth Minister Search Committee. You can also learn more about the Youth Minister Search Committee in the April issue of Chimes, our congregational magazine.

Report from Ministry Architects

Updates Youth Youth Ministry Ministry Architects
Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Ministry Architects, a church consulting group, recently concluded a three-day assessment of Westminster’s youth ministry. The group presented the church with a 26-page report about the ministry, its strengths, and its needs.

For the most part, Ministry Architects feels “the youth ministry at WPC is doing extremely well.” In fact, Sara Bailey, the consultant on-site, described our church as “great.” Bailey continued by saying “Unlike the title of Collin’s book, Good to Great, in which he speaks of companies moving from being ‘good’ companies to being ‘great’ companies, the youth ministry at Westminster is already at ‘great.’ The church is ready to make a leap from a great youth ministry to a top-notch youth ministry.” In a time of transition, this is music to our ears!

So what makes Westminster’s youth program great? Some of the current strengths listed in the report are: The exceptional youth at WPC, very dedicated volunteers, consistent and established programming, youth choirs, and the collaborative staff. Given the much beloved youth ministers recently left the staff, the overall climate surrounding our youth ministry is quite positive.

How do we become a “top-notch” youth ministry? According to Ministry Architects, we work through the obstacles sited in the report collaboratively to strategically move the youth ministry forward. Some of those obstacles include: understanding the challenges most youth ministries face, missing framework in the infrastructure of the youth ministry, long term goals to lead us forward, clarification of roles with the new staffing structure, unrealistic expectations for our new youth minister, and the physical youth space.

Where do we go from here? Ministry Architects concluded their visit with very detailed recommendations and an outline on how to strategically implement their recommendations. We will continue to pray and process all the information presented. In the meantime we continue along our path, the right path, which is all “great” stuff!

The new Chimes

  Chimes Youth Choir
Sunday, September 1, 2013

We’re excited to share with you something we’ve been working on this summer: A brand new Chimes.

The new Chimes is a magazine-like design that is more visual, colorful, and illustrative of Westminster’s ministries. In this new format, we hope to better tell the story of our church, its members, and its ministries.

For this debut issue of the new format, we’re focusing on Westminster’s ministry with young people. You’ll find full articles on Sunday education, a new experiment with youth choirs, WCDC, Camp Henry, and the youth ministry, plus news and information from across the congregation.
