Vanuatu devastated by cyclone, WPC encouraged to contribute

Over the years, a number of WPC members have visited Vanuatu, including David Walter, former member, who spent time there as a mission-teacher. The area was recently devastated by a category 5 cyclone, the aftermath of which can be seen at the link below. Reportedly, at least 11 were killed during the "monster" storm and up to 90% of the buildings in the capital were either destroyed or damaged. Aid agencies are describing the event as catastrophic and are concerned with imminent food shortages - perhaps the most challenging the area has ever faced.

Westminster Presbyterian Church members are encouraged to make contributions written to WPC-Vanuatu. They will be passed on to the Presbyterian Disaster Agency.

Dianne Carroll Burdick Exhibition at WPC

There is a new art exhibit in the WPC art gallery! Dianne Carroll Burdick will display her photography titled “Spring” during March and April. A reception for Dianne will be on March 15 following the worship service, from 12:20p to 2:00p. Please stop by and view this interesting exhibit, and join Dianne at her reception on March 15.

Head Custodian
Job Description
Westminster Presbyterian Church – Grand Rapids, MI
Supervised by:  Facilities Manager

 

Position Summary:

This position is accountable to the Facilities Manager.  The primary focus of this position is to insure that Westminster’s facilities are properly maintained and cleaned to host church and related ministry events and programming.  This involves oversight, planning, scheduling, execution, and follow-up.

Job Classification:  Non-Exempt, hourly position, 35 hours per week

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prioritize, schedule, and direct custodial tasks on a daily, weekly, and annual basis.
  2. Schedule and coordinate major cleaning projects with other staff members.
  3. Maintain and clean all carpeted areas.
  4. Maintain and clean all tiled areas.
  5. Coordinate with other staff members, committees, and leaders to ensure proper set-up, equipping, and restoration of classrooms and other facilities.
  6. Make minor building and equipment repairs.
  7. Order, store, inventory, and secure building supplies and materials.
  8. Provide emergency “on call” services.
  9. Have a good understanding of the building, mechanics, and equipment to be available to step in for Facility Manager as needed
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
  11. Works with others as a team to accomplish church goals.

Essential Skills

  1. Relate well to members, visitors, and staff.
  2. Possess interpersonal skills to effectively supervise the custodial staff.
  3. Able to effectively and safely operate equipment to maintain the interior and exterior of the WPC campus.
  4. Attend to details and thoroughness.
  5. Able to work flexible hours, and be available for special events as needed and respond to emergency “on call” situations.
  6. Capable of moving heavy and/or awkward objects.
  7. Employ safe work practices.
  8. Able to work in a Christian, faith based environment.

Administrative Assistant for Mission
Job Description
Westminster Presbyterian Church - Grand Rapids, MI
Supervised by: Church Administrator

Job Classification: Non-exempt, hourly position, 35 hour per week

Position Summary:

This position supplies administrative support to the program staff responsible for the following ministries:

 Associate Pastor for Mission and Pastoral Care
 Minister for Mission
 Church Administrator

Key duties and Responsibilities:

For Mission:

  1. Track mission participants in event registration, receive and record the required deposits, forms etc.
  2. Maintain Mission Participation lists and web interface
  3. Research travel arrangements and track dates and deadlines for mission trips
  4. Maintain all committee minutes for committees under Minister for Mission and Associate Pastor
  5. Update and maintain, in CDM+, all committee members for groups under Minister for Mission and Associate Pastor
  6. Back-up as needed for office staff, including maintaining membership database and related functions; financial database entry; calendaring and mailing; filing; greeter’s desk; maintaining office machines; etc.
  7. Other duties as assigned by Minister for Mission and Associate Pastor

Skills Required:

  1. Ability to positively interact with staff, volunteers, parishioners and public
  2. Strong computer skills: MS Office, Publisher, Outlook, and CDM+, In Design
  3. Ability to work with internet/websites and social media
  4. Strong communication and listening skills
  5. Excellent command of the English language: correct grammar, proofreading, editing, and composition skills
  6. Experience operating office machines and equipment
  7. Possess a sense of flexibility
  8. Must be detail oriented and have good organizational skills
  9. Self – starter and problem solving abilities necessary

Jeremy Bork called to be Middle School Youth Director

WPC Youth is excited to announce the hiring of our new Middle School Youth Director, Jeremy Bork. A native of Iowa, Jeremy studied Youth Ministry and Christian Education at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and is currently a Master of Divinity student at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. You may have seen Jeremy around WPC already, serving the congregation as both a Seminary Intern and a volunteer leader for the Middle School Youth Group and Middle School Church School. 

Jeremy’s previous work in ministry includes youth ministry internships for RCA churches in Iowa and New York, as well as serving as a leader in his college’s campus ministry and working as a program director at Ingham Lake Bible Camp in Wallingford, Iowa. 
 
Jeremy’s responsibilities as Middle School Youth Director will include planning and running Youth Group and Middle School Church School on Sundays as well as leading retreats and serving as a spiritual leader and mentor to the middle school youth.  
 
Jeremy has a heart for equality and justice. He longs for racial reconciliation, food and animal justice, and the welcome of all persons in the church. Jeremy is super excited to be part of Westminster’s community and is eager to dive deeper!

Mission does, indeed, matter at Westminster.

We believe we were sent here to do what God has called us to do. That is our mission as a church: to do what God has called us to do. It is what matters most of all.

At the very least, our mission is to fulfill our stated congregational vision: to do justice, love, kindness, and walk humbly with our God. Our mission is to do what the charge at the end of worship tells us every week as we go out to be the church:go into the world in peace, have courage, hold onto all that is good, return no one evil for evil, strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, and help the suffering. Honor all people, and love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Without a roof over our heads and our sanctuary, we would not have the kind of worship that drives our work for God and that keeps us focused on our work in mission. So, we must see that the roof is paid for.

But mostly, mission is what we do for people outside the walls of our sanctuary. For the first time in a Westminster capital campaign, instead of tithing a portion of the funds raised to an"outside the walls" mission, we are dedicating more than half of the $2,500,000 to be raised to the core missions of Westminster: the Westminster Child Development Center, Camp Henry, and the Downtown Food Pantry. All three missions are critical parts of the Westminster vision.

Heather Colletto appointed Minister for Mission

Heather is thrilled to get to know the people and the work of Westminster. She is passionate about connecting individuals to his/her unique role within a mission. A non-profit donor relations professional, she has previously worked in Slovakia and northern Thailand, but most recently served as Development and Communications Coordinator at the YWCA West Central Michigan just one block away. She is originally from Omaha, Nebraska and holds a BA in English from Rutgers University.

Heather and her husband, Michael, moved in Grand Rapids in 2010. They live in Eastown, where Heather is a board member for the Eastown Community Association. Their daughter, Beatrice, is 14 months old and attends Westminster Child Development Center. Beatrice and the family cat are blissfully unaware that they are about to share the spotlight when Baby-to-Be arrives in March!

Severe Weather Policy

During severe weather, staff will monitor weather broadcasts to determine the appropriate course of action. For winter weather, the church and WCDC follow Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) for daytime events.

The church is assumed to be open unless otherwise specified. Staff should make a determination about the safety of coming to work and notify their supervisor as appropriate.

DAYTIME EVENTS

  • Who decides: Pastors, church administrator, and facilities manager.
  • Criteria:
o If GRPS is closed, daytime events at Westminster will be cancelled—including the Downtown Food Pantry and Open Door Ministry programs.
o On Sundays and non-school days, by decision of staff.
o The church office will remain open, unless otherwise specified. • By when: 6:30a

EVENING EVENTS

  • Who decides: Pastors, church administrator, and facilities manager.
  • Criteria: By decision of staff.
  • By when: 12:00p 


WESTMINSTER CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

  • Who decides: Executive and assistant directors of WCDC. •
  • Criteria:
o If GRPS is closed, WCDC will also be closed.

o If GRPS is closed for inservices, but the weather is inclement, WCDC may close.
o If GRPS closes only afternoon kindergarten, WCDC will remain open.

Downtown Food Pantry Partners with Meijer for Simply Give Holiday Campaign

The Downtown Food Pantry has partnered with Meijer for the Simply Give Holiday Campaign at the 28th Street and Kalamazoo store from November 2nd through January 3rd.

The partnership is a tremendous opportunity for the Downtown Pantry. Meijer has provided them with $10 donation cards that can be handed out to our congregation. November 14th and 15th are DOUBLE MATCH days! For every $10 donated at this store on these 2 days, Meijer will donate an additional $20 resulting in $30 to our pantry. It's not often that you can triple your money so easily, so please take advantage of this!  It is important to note that it is ONLY the 28th Street and Kalamazoo store that we are partnered with.  

A portion of the proceeds will be shared with the Central Reformed Food Pantry, a sub-pantry of the Downtown Food Pantry.

Making a Difference Day at Benton Harbor

On Saturday, October 25 four members of Westminster Presbyterian Church left the south parking lot at 8:00 am : destination Benton Harbor; to work at the annual "Making a Difference Day " with FPCBH and  the surrounding neighborhood.  The members which volunteered were Dick Hubbard, Pete and Patricia Land and Brian Spangelo.

We arrived in Benton Harbor a 1/2 hour early, so we and decided to drive to down town area of Benton Harbor to look around.  At the same time we looked for a place to have coffee and maybe a snack. Fortunately, I saw the "Mosaic Store" which I remembered from years past. It is a non profit store staffed by local churches, selling used goods , coffee drinks , and snacks. We enjoyed a great cup of coffee and white chocolate cookies.  At ten on the hour , we arrived at FPCBH , and we were greeted by Julie Brien, pastor Laurie Hartzell, and community coordinator, Corey Bell. Other members of the church and community were also present.

Before we left for our tasks, Julie Brien opened in prayer and gave instructions of were our groups were going to work. Julie and Corey had it well organized and everybody knew what their jobs entailed. Particia Land and Julie Brien and others went to the Morton School to patch, sand , and paint an office. Dick Hubbard and I went and worked on Mr. Green's house ; to put trim boards around  and install a mail box post, and mail box.

At twelve thirty we stopped working and had a fantastic lunch . prepared for by Laurie Hartzell and Corey Bell. It was pulled pork, macaroni with cheese, potato salad, and various desserts. What a great lunch, especially the amount work that went into it.

After lunch every one returned to their particular jobs which were proceeding along quite nicely. However, I did have to buy some extra trim boards and a mail box for Mr. Green's house. In the late afternoon , the painting crew came and painted the trim around Mr. Green's house, while the others put finishing touches on to Morton School's office.

It was a beautiful, sunny warm Saturday for working. All the work was completed before we went home. It was a real blessing to work with FPCBH members, the staff, and the community members. Every one enjoyed the work and fellowship in volunteering their time to help the neighborhood. It was a real blessing.

Come celebrate fall at the WPC Family Bonfire and Potluck Dinner.  Saturday, October 18 at 5:00p, hosted by the Calderon/Shupe family, 7170 2 Mile Rd., Ada, Michigan.  Hot dogs, beverages and s’mores provided.  Bring lawn chairs, table-settings, and a dish to pass.
