Third Quarter 2023 Stewardship Update

Hearts Wide Open… Gratitude… Thank you for your faithful, committed giving that makes possible everything that is happening at and through Westminster this year. We have felt the spirit of God moving through us as we witness baptisms and confirmations, as we celebrate new members, as we participate in youth, young adult, and intergenerational activities, and as we support each other through difficult situations and grief. Beyond our walls, we are living our call as we “Go into the world” – the Food Pantry, Degage, Family Promise, Together West Michigan, Refugee support, the hard work of justice and reconciliation, and so much more. As of the end of the third quarter, our financial report in comparison to last year:

Pledges and gifts:     2022 $853,557 (67%)     2023 $893,238 (60% of budget)

Expenses:     2022 $1,116,415 (71%)     2023 $1,191,432 (73% of budget)

Our Stewardship theme in 2023 has been Hearts Wide Open. We are living it through our gifts of time (150 or more members volunteer in various committees and programs at church), our gifts of talents (the value of talents offered for church operations and activities is immeasurable), and our gifts of financial resources. It is our response to God’s amazing grace and love for us.

With deep gratitude!

Your Stewardship Committee,

Cheryl Bremer (Elder for Stewardship), Kate Bylsma (Trustee Rep), Scott Jennings, Anita Sukenik, Cheryl VanTil, and staff (Rev. Lynette Sparks, Angie Kelley, Deanna Clark)

Donations and Finances: FAQ

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, please reach out to Angie Kelley at angiek@wpcgr.org or 616-717-5533.

Where does my donation to Westminster go?

Through our online donation platform, you can choose where your donation will go. Many members pledge to donate to the church’s general fund, which supports many projects. Other options include the Deacon Fund, Camp Henry, the Downtown Food Pantry, the Westminster Childhood Development Center, and the music program.

How can I help out if I can't donate financially?

We recognize that not everyone has the means to support our ministry financially; we never mean to put any pressure on people. There are many ways to give and to serve—you can find volunteer opportunities to extend Christ’s love through service here and donate your time, talents, and energy.

Opportunities for giving include:

  • Online giving on our secure site
  • Checks sent to the church office, attn: Angie Kelley
  • Through the offering plate
  • Gifts of stock may be directed to: Westminster Presbyterian Church (please inform Angie Kelley of the brokerage/firm from which your gift is being sent)
  • If you are at least seventy and a half, you may consider making your charitable gift through a QCD (direct transfers of funds from your IRA custodian)
  • A legacy gift through your estate plan (see brochure)

Who decides how to use the donations the church receives?

Many people are involved in handling the church’s finances and fundraising for the church, including staff members, church elders, and congregational committees. Westminster prioritizes its core missions, as well as serving when the need arises.

What is the deacon fund?

This fund was established many years ago to assist church members with short-term financial needs, such as utility payments, transportation, and insurance payments. The fund is generously funded by the congregation, and we want to put it to use for those that have been hard hit by under-employment, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances. To initiate a request, please contact Susan Jennings at susanj@wpcgr.org. All information will be kept confidential.
