During the summer, our children’s ministry team will share a book we love each week with questions and activities for children to engage with the book and its lessons. We encourage you to find these books at your favorite library or bookstore and read them with your whole family—since these lessons apply for all ages and stages of life!
My Footprints by Bao Phi
Every child feels different in some way, but Thuy (Twee) feels “double different.” She is Vietnamese American and she has two moms. Thuy walks home one winter afternoon, angry and lonely after a bully’s taunts. Then a bird catches her attention and sets Thuy on an imaginary exploration. What if she could fly away like a bird? What if she could sprint like a deer, or roar like a bear? Mimicking the footprints of each creature in the snow, she makes her way home to the arms of her moms. Together, the three of them imagine beautiful and powerful creatures who always have courage—just like Thuy.
Main Focus: God created us each uniquely special, and when we create together we become special together.
Questions:
I wonder what the kids at the beginning of the book were doing that made (Twee) Thuy upset
What were some of the animals Thuy saw or imagined
What special things did Thuy make in the snow?
I wonder why Thuy felt better at the end of the book?
Activity: Make pictures using ink pads and fingerprints.
