Coming out of the pandemic and assessing the needs of our congregation, we are living into a new deacon model with two deacon committees: Connecting Deacons and Supporting Deacons. Each of these boards have fifteen people called from the congregation, each serving for three years.
Supporting Deacons share the love of Christ by developing caring relationships with Westminster members—visiting on a regular basis, offering home communion, and making contact by phone or by sending cards. Their ministry offers support for both shorter and longer periods of time.
Connecting Deacons seek to share the love of Christ by offering ministries of care, welcome, and connection in specific areas that match their gifts and interests. They respond to individuals offering encouragement and compassion. They prepare elements for our communion services. They oversee acts of hospitality and welcome including Sunday morning greeting and coffee hour, and our meal ministry. With events like Dine with Nine, this group is looking for ways to help build our sense of connection and community with one another.
Ways all members of the congregation can participate in Deacon ministry:
- Let the nominating committee know if you are interested in serving in this way or if you see gifts for these ministries in others who you believe would find this ministry meaningful. Contact Cheri Reid, Elder for Nominations, nominations@wpcgr.org
- Deacons invite individuals to join in ministries of care, support, and compassion by:
- Preparing and delivering meals to members following surgery or welcoming a new baby.
- Greeting people as they arrive for worship
- Serving at our Coffee Hour for 15-20 minutes following the service as a welcoming presence
- Driving members of our congregation to a worship service or event
