Join Together West Michigan to Support Affordable Housing

Public Hearing about the Fulmar 3-towers project at Fulton & Market Streets downtown GR

Westminster Presbyterian Church is one of 18 organizational members of Together West Michigan (TWM). TWM is advocating with the City of Grand Rapids that the developer’s current proposal of support for the GR Affordable Housing fund be significantly increased—it is woefully small.

The Proposal is to contribute $8.5M over 20 years ($425,000/year); this contribution is 1.5% of the total $565.5M of tax subsidies. Four-hundred twenty five thousand dollars will build less than two modest 2-3 bedroom houses at today’s construction prices. As it stands now the developers would be reimbursed $565.5 million in state and local tax capture of their projected costs of $797 million, almost 75% of the total.

Grand Rapids has an acute housing shortage, especially for families earning less than 120% of Area Median Income. We want to fill the GR City Commission chambers at the Public Hearing on Tuesday, November 12, 2:00 p.m. We have people who will speak…and covet your attendance to fill the room. We will meet in the parking lot at Westminster at 12:45 p.m. to carpool or walk over.

As this topic is an Agenda item, Public Comment will be at the beginning of the meeting. Please join us and other justice-seeking residents about this important issue. You need not be a resident of GR to attend. If you park in the City/County ramp below City Hall, bring your ticket to the 9th floor to have it validated – free parking.

From our Westminster Congregational Charge:

Go into the world in peace. Have courage. Hold on to all this is good. Return no one evil for evil. Do justice. Walk with those who are fainthearted. Help those who suffer. Honor all people. Love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
