(Picking up at Westminster Only)
Report Time: 7:40am
Take a trip on board the Lady Huron II and enjoy a refreshing sightseeing tour by boat. The 2 hour cruise takes place in the St. Clair River then goes under the two Blue Water Bridges into Lake Huron. You will view the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, Canada, Great Lake ships, the Huron Lightship and the Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock. We will also have a buffet lunch during the cruise.
We then enjoy two museums:
Huron Lightship Museum – Lightships are floating lighthouses that are anchored in areas where it was too deep, expensive, or impractical to construct a lighthouse. Lightships displayed a light at the top of a mast and, in areas of fog, also sounded a fog signal and radio beacon. The HURON Lightship was the last operating lightship on the Great Lakes and served for over 50 years when she was retired in 1970. For 36 of those years, she was stationed at Corsica Shoals, a sandy area 6 miles north of Port Huron. She was permanently moored in sand, along the banks of the St. Clair River in scenic Pine Grove Park, Port Huron, MI. There is an extensive collection of artifacts, including many model ships, as well as a live camera feed of the bottom of the river, taken off a camera positioned at the bow. It was dedicated in 1990 as a National Historic Landmark.
Thomas Edison Depot- The Thomas Edison Depot Museum enhances visitor appreciation for the life and genius of Thomas Edison and his boyhood home in Port Huron. The Museum is housed inside the historic Fort Gratiot depot and the exhibits portray Edison’s multi-faceted story of creativity, family support, adversity, perseverance, and ultimate triumph. His successes and great contributions to society are presented through a sit-down theater experience, live science presentations, and hands-on interactives. Outside the depot, a restored baggage car rests on a spur of a railroad track. Inside visitors discover a re-creation of young Edison’s mobile chemistry lab and printing shop. This is a self-guided tour.
There is a $10 cost for this event.
