“Always” Contemporary Dance Performance

“Always” Contemporary Dance Performance
Nov. 14, 11am, Westminster Sanctuary

The Event:
Always is a 20 minute professional dance performance in the Westminster sanctuary. Accompanying the dancers is a newly composed, recorded piece of piano and violin music written for another Sanctuary Project production and being expanded for this perfomance of Always. During the performance, the audience will be seated in the choir loft and on the chancel and chancel steps which will be cleared for the event. The team of professional, contemporary dancers will perfom in the pews, aisles and balcony. Enhanced by a professional lighting team, these performances are designed to offer a unique perspective of the sanctuary’s sacred space. Following the performance, the audience will have a “talk back” conversation with the choreographer and dancers about their perspective and experience creating and performing the piece. The conversation will take place in the dining room over a light lunch, which is included in the suggested donation.

Suggested Donation (Benefitting The Community and Service Center)
Suggested Donation $15 per person, $30 per family. The proceeds will supply art materials for the Community and Service Center so that people can engage creatively in the warmth of that space throughout the winter. This performace is open to everyone, if cost is a challenge, please join the event at no cost. A light lunch following the performance is included. The audience is capped at 95 spaces. We encourage you to save your seat sooner rather than later!
The Sanctuary Project:
Choreographer and Associate Professor of Dance at Hope College, Lindsey Hanson, has produced performances throughout 2026 in four different sacred spaces creating the collective project- The Sanctuary Project. The performance at Westminster, on Nov. 14th, will be the final performance, made possible becasue of a $250,000 grant from the Creative Arts Collective. The Sanctuary Project is a site-specific concept of dance in collaboration with a church’s architecture and values. It is a continual body of work that is re-imagined based on the host church. At each site, the project is customized in order to uplift and enhance the building’s unique architecture as well as the congregation’s values. The Sanctuary Project has taken form in new spaces, reintroducing a church to its congregation. This project merges historic architecture through an innovative lens. Watch the 2026 film of the production Seraphim here. Professional videographer, Jonny Yepez, will produce a film of the perfomance, including ariel images.

Director’s note on Always:

Always is an embodied expression of Westminster Presbyterian’s mission: ecclesia reformata, semper reformanda–“the Church reformed, always reforming.”

The dance explores the theme of “always” and how it is bedrock to our faith in the triune God: through all the twists and turns of life, throughout history and into the future, God is always faithful. The steadfastness of “always” is paramount to the good news. God’s power, provision, and grace are never-ending, always present.

My hope is that this work invites you to see your space, our world, and our shared, everyday lives with new eyes, looking for the eternal “always.”
